Makeup brushes are a must-have for any level of makeup application, from basic to advanced. There are many different types of makeup brushes available in the market, each designed to perform a specific task. In this post, I explain what each type of brush is used for and how to choose them to achieve your desired look.
Angled/Slanted Brushes.
Angled or slanted brushes are especially great for precision, perfecting the look of eyeliner wings and sharp brows. They can also be used in powder contouring and bronzing, as the angled shape fits perfectly around your facial features. Depending on their size and shape, some angled brushes can also be used for foundation application.
Foundation Brushes.
Foundation brushes are designed to provide a seamless application of liquid and cream products. They come in several shapes and sizes, so finding the right brush for you is key. Flat foundation brushes have dense bristles that provide full coverage while buffing out imperfections or blemishes. Dome-shaped foundation brushes are slightly more angled than flat foundations, allowing for greater contour and precision when applying makeup in hard-to-reach areas on the face such as under eyes and around the nose area.
Flat Contour Brushes.
Flat contour make up brushes are an essential tool for any makeup kit. These brushes have a flat and angled head designed to hug the curves of the face so that you can accurately apply your makeup with precision. Flat contour brushes are ideal for blending highlights and shadows together, as well as applying liquid, cream or powder products onto small areas like eyes or nose without having to switch out your brush for each product type. The flat shape of the brush also allows you to be very precise in where you place color and coverage on your face.
Blush Brushes.
Blush brushes have a fluffy head designed to pick up, apply and blend blush onto the cheeks. The fluffiness of the brush allows it to completely envelop the apples of the cheeks with color as you buff and sweep in a circular motion. Blush can take your look from day to night, so mastering how to use this brush correctly is essential! To use a blush brush, start by picking up a small amount of product and lightly tapping off any excess on the back of your hand. Apply onto the apples of your cheeks and using small, soft circling motions work it outwards towards your temples. Using this technique will ensure that your makeup looks natural, even and adds definition and color to your face without creating harsh lines.
Fan Brushes.
Fan brushes are an essential part of the beauty kit, perfect for creating a flawless finish. They have wide bristles designed to dust away any excess product or fallout and can also be used to apply highlighter along the cheekbone and décolleté area. For precision work, fan brushes with tightly packed synthetic fibers are ideal and will allow you to target specific areas with ease. Start by lightly dipping the brush into your product and tapping off any excess before dabbing onto the areas you want to highlight. Next, use a sweeping motion across your face blending in any harsh lines so that everything is looking subtle yet radiant!
