The pineal gland is a powerful little organ and could be your answer to sleeping better, increasing your intuition and living a healthier, longer life.
When the pineal gland is functioning properly, you feel content, happy, aware and well-rested.
In this article, learn more about the Melatonin for Pineal Gland functioning and ways to nurture your pineal gland to improve your life.
About the Powerful Pineal Gland
The pineal gland is an Endocrine Gland.
Endocrine glands are ductless glands responsible for secreting hormones directly into the blood.
The small gland, the size of a pea or grain of rice is located mid-brain, between the two brain hemispheres. (see image below).
The pineal gland was the last gland to be discovered in the body. Its shape is similar to a pine cone (therefore the name).
The gland is a reddish-grey color and manages blood flow amounts only second to the kidneys.
Melatonin for Pineal Gland
The pineal is responsible for only one hormone – Melatonin. Melatonin regulates our day/night cycles and our biological clock.
Melatonin is produced in darkness and derived from serotonin (a neurotransmitter) to regulate our sleep cycles.
The overall function of the pineal gland is to be in charge of moderating sleep and our perception of light.
Jet lag, as an example, is caused when our sleep cycles are disrupted from traveling and our sleep patterns are disrupted. The creates a rotten feeling that can last days after returning from a vacation. If you have ever experienced Jet lag, you are familiar with how an out-of-sink pineal gland and reduced melatonin levels can make you feel.
On a side note, serotonin (neurotransmitter) is mostly found in the gut with a small amount found in the brain where it assists with melatonin creation. Serotonin produced in the gut is connected to feelings of happiness and preventing depression.
It is important to keep both sources of serotonin healthy.
Consider Aging and Melatonin Levels
As we age, we often sleep less due to reduced melatonin levels and pineal gland calcification.
Studies have been done where Alzheimer’s patients have been tested and found to be low in melatonin possibly contributing to their night wandering also known as sundowner’s syndrome.
“The body’s pattern of melatonin production is similar to that of the other “anti-aging” hormones – human growth hormone (HGH) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Throughout early life, melatonin is produced in abundance. Shortly before puberty, though, the production of melatonin begins to drop, and then continues to decline steadily as we age.” – from the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A. Balch, CNC
Keeping healthy melatonin levels and a well-functioning pineal gland is very important in matters of anti-aging health.
The Eight Endocrine Glands and Hormones
There are eight endocrine glands that work together as one system. In this post, I am focusing on the pineal gland yet I have included some information below on all the eight glands and which hormones they produce for an overall view and perspective.
The Eight Endocrine Glands are the pineal, pituitary, thyroid + parathyroid, hypothalamus, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries (women), testes (men). See below the gland and the corresponding hormone(s). Notice how some glands produce several types of hormones and others only one or 2 types.
The pineal gland, as mentioned, only produces one – melatonin.
Endocrine Gland | Hormones (not all listed) |
Pineal | Melatonin (1) |
Pituitary (known as the Master Gland) | Several hormones that control the other glands and hormones |
Thyroid + Parathyroid Glands | Two hormones – triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) (2) |
Hypothalamus | Eight types including dopamine (8) |
Adrenals | Adrenaline, cortisol, aldosterone (3) |
Pancreas | Insulin (1) |
Ovaries | Estrogen and Progesterone (2) |
Testes | Testosterone (1) |
What Damages the Pineal Gland?
Overall, calcification is the demise of the pineal gland.
Calcium, fluoride, and phosphorus deposits can accumulate in the pineal gland as we age yet calcification can be prevented.
Fluoride found in water sources has been found to be the most damaging to the pineal gland. The center of the pineal is water.
Fluoride calcification has been found to greatly affect this gland. Consider avoiding fluoridated water sources, fluoride in toothpaste, and drinking filtered water.
Calcium in cheap calcium supplements may be a contributor as well to pineal gland calcification. Easily avoidable toxins including artificial sweeteners, mercury (tooth fillings), smoking, alcohol may also contribute to pineal gland calcification.
What Heals the Pineal Gland? and How to Increase Melatonin for Pineal Gland Functioning
1. Eat Boron Rich Foods. The mineral Boron is necessary for the metabolism of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. Eating foods containing Boron as listed has been found to help nourish and cleanse the pineal gland.
- Avocados
- Apples
- Prunes
- Raisins
- Almonds, raw
- Hazelnuts, raw
- Dates
- Garlic
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Oregano
2. Keep it Dark in the Bedroom. Turn off all sources of light in your bedroom at night including cell phones, TVs, clocks. The pineal gland regenerates and produces melatonin when it is dark.
3. Avoid electronic devices 2-3 hours before bed. Turn off the TV. Shut down your cell phone or place on airplane mode and turn off the cell phone light. Best practice is to keep cell phones and TV’s in entirely different rooms.
4. Consider black-out curtains. If you have a lot of outside light entering your bedroom, invest in some blackout curtains which help a bit with quieting a room too.
5. Yellow light your E readers in the bedroom. Many new E readers on the market come with a yellow light setting. The blue light is known to keep you awake at night. There is no mistake the new E readers have an option for the yellow light setting. Or, only read physical books in the bedroom.
6. Activate Your Pineal Gland/Intuition with meditation.
7. Enjoy the sunshine during the day. During normal waking hours, in low doses, feel the sun on your face and head and allow the light to connect with the pineal gland.
8. Eat regular meals at regular times. Regular meal times help keep you in sync with regular daily routines and rhythms of the day. The pineal gland likes consistency, routines and rhythms.
9. Keep your diet light at night. Melatonin production begins after nightfall and at that time the digestive process is slowed. Stop eating 2-3 hours before sleep and eat light dinners.
10. Avoid stimulants. Coffee and tea late in the day may keep you awake at night and avoid completely if you suspect caffeine is keeping you awake at night.
11. Avoid exercising late at night. Vigorous activity delays melatonin secretion. Exercise in the morning, outside in the morning light, if you can.
12. Listen to sound frequencies designed to resonate with the pineal gland. Check out YouTube and search for pineal gland or sixth chakra meditation sounds for some great recorded sounds to listen to while you sleep or relax before bed.
13. Try raw cacao. Raw cacao, the purest form of chocolate you can consume is cold-pressed, unroasted cacao beans. Raw cacao powder is considered a pineal gland stimulant plus the includes an incredible amount of antioxidants. Note, raw cacao is not a nervous system stimulant.
The Sixth Chakra and the Pineal Gland Relationship
The pineal gland is the corresponding gland to the Sixth Chakra (also known as the third eye).
The Sixth Chakra is located in the middle of the forehead, between the eyebrows. The relationship between the Sixth Chakra and the pineal gland is a powerful relationship for you to build if you are interested in increasing your positive intuitive thoughts.
The color associated with the Sixth Chakra is indigo. Wear indigo, visualize the color indigo in the location of the Sixth Chakra.
Essential oils to help open up the Sixth Chakra are frankincense and eucalyptus.
Yoga poses for the Sixth Chakra include child’s pose.
Intuition is said to grow from the Sixth Chakra and from the pineal gland collectively. Working with the pineal gland and Sixth Chakra through meditation can help you increase your intuition in amazing ways while keeping the pineal gland healthy and in flow.
Meditation with the Pineal Gland
While meditating, focus on where the pineal gland is located in your brain. Visualize indigo or yellow light entering the location of your Sixth Chakra/Third Eye just above and between your eyebrows.
Visualize the color entering through the third eye location to your pineal gland and out again. Repeat to yourself while breathing deeply and slowly in and out.
Practice working with this gland and location as you meditate. Feel it, nurture it, allow it to work.
Conclusion and More to Learn
I hope you find the pineal gland as fascinating as I do.
I personally have found working with this organ in my body as valuable as exercise has been for my heart and cardiovascular system.
We have many ways to heal ourselves and improve our lives readily available to us. For the mighty pineal gland, there is a lot to learn and may this be your catalyst into understanding more about the very important and mighty pine cone-shaped gland in your brain.
